EECE-218 Troubleshooting with HC11-VDK
The HC11-VDK board is a robust piece of hardware. If it is not functioning
right, it might probably be your mistake. You may be missing something or
doing something wrong. Check the serial connections first.
HC11 Vandymatic Development Kit

-
If the LED is not working, it is probably the fuse. Check the
fuse out. It is either burned or not connected. Some of the boards have
no fuse installed (bypassed), so check if this is your case.
-
If the LED still
is not working, another possibility is that the adapter
is not functioning well. Voltage setting should be at 6V.
Make sure that the arrow on the adapter directly points to 6V sign if you
are using one of the HP variable power supplies. Some of you will be
assigned one universal AC/DC adapter that comes with the proper connector
for the HC11-VDK board.
-
If you see some characters that don't make sense on the
PC terminal screen,
the error is probably in the setup of the serial communications program
(e.g., PROCOMM). Make sure that setup of your communications program is right
(should be 9600 baud, NP, 1S, half duplex.)
Add-on to
HC11-VDK (satellite board)
-
If you are using
a satellite board, make sure the cable is aligned
right. Pin 1 from the HC11-VDK board goes to pin 1 of the satellite board. The cable
can be attached such a way that some pins can be left out.
-
If you are using
a satellite board, ensure that the cables connected to J4 (5V), J5 (GND), J6
(+12V), J7 (-12V), and J8 (D/A)
should not touch each other. Make sure, they are separate.

-
If you think that the satellite board is not responding properly, check
the cables. If the problem persists, it might be the Port Replacement
Unit MC6824. Use the memory modify (mm) command to write $FF to
$1007 (DDRC).
Then write $F0 to location $1003. If this lights up 4 LEDS, the PRU is
in good shape. Ensure that JP1 and SW1 are properly set. Otherwise, ask your TA to
give you another board.
