Brett Byram, PhD

Brett is the BEAM Lab's director. Brett graduated with a PhD from Duke in 2011, and a Bachelors degree from Vanderbilt in 2004. He's spent time in Mountain View, California working at Siemens' Ultrasound Business Unit, and he spent a year working with Jorgen Jensen's Center for Fast Ultrasound in Lyngby, Denmark. Brett served as an Assistant Research Professor at Duke University from 2012-2013. He joined the Vanderbilt Faculty in 2013.  Brett is part of the Vanderbilt Institute in Surgery and Engineering (VISE), and is an affiliate of the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science (VUIIS).

Adam Luchies

Adam Picture

Adam is a postdoc in the Beam Lab. He received his PhD in ECE from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2016 and a BS in Engineering from John Brown University in 2009. His research interests include ultrasound beamforming, quantitative ultrasound, machine learning, and acoustic microscopy.

Kazuyuki (Kaz) Dei

Kaz Picture

Kaz is a graduate student in the BEAM lab. He was born and raised in Japan, and earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley in 2000. Until 2012, he worked for Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Semiconductor America, Inc. as an electrical design and development engineer. His expertise is automation control system design and electrical hardware development. Kaz is now researching signal processing for medical imaging applications.

Jaime Tierney

Jaime Picture

Jaime is a graduate student in the BEAM lab. She grew up in Massachusetts, and earned her BA in Mathematics from the College of the Holy Cross in 2012. Until 2014, she worked as a Medical Image Analyst at inviCRO. She is now studying noninvasive ultrasound imaging techniques for estimating microvasculature perfusion.

Kristy Walsh

Kristy is a graduate student in the BEAM Lab from Willoughby Hills, Ohio. She earned a BSE in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2014. During her undergraduate career, Kristy worked in the Vince Lab at the Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute on ultrasound projects using RF analysis. She also spent time in CT Electrical Engineering at Philips Healthcare in Cleveland. Currently, Kristy is researching on-axis displacements to estimate stiffness using acoustic radiation force.

Katie Ozgun

Katie is a graduate student in the BEAM Lab. She received her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 2016. Her current research focuses on the development of beamforming techniques to improve blood flow imaging.

Siegfried Schlunk

Siegfried Picture

Siegfried is a graduate student in the BEAM Lab. He grew up around Nashville, Tennessee, and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2016 with a BE in Biomedical Engineering and Mathematics. He is currently researching methods for improving medical ultrasound image quality in cardiac and kidney applications.
