The Chair of Bioengineering: Dr. Ronald Fournier at U Toledo has agreed to lead the lecture in BME 272 on 9/11 as a result of an invitation from Dr. Todd Giorgio. He will discuss design considerations in the development of a bioartificial pancreas, describe the development of the design component within the new Bioengineering Dept. at U Toledo and discuss academic design pros and cons with students.
Discussion items included the area of Tissue Engineering, especially design of Bioartificial Organs, such as Kidney, Pancreas, & Liver. Scaling issues - from rat to dog to human were addressed. Mass transport issues and their relationship to encapsulation methodology was discussed.
An event occurred early in the lecture which will be the subject of a later discussion

Specifically addressed was Deming's Plan/Do/Study/Act Paradigm, Conflict Resolution, Outcomes Research, Health Care v Sick Care, Failure Monitoring v failure & success monitoring, statistics (sigma), and "system" v "people" screwups.
A neat response regarding the difference between MDs in sandboxes & engineers in same occurred.
